Get Your Endorphins
As you navigate your 20s, you're probably hearing a lot about the importance of staying active. Sure, hitting the gym or joining that Pilates class can sculpt your body, but it’s the mental boost that can truly transform your life.
My mom, who has degrees in both nursing and psychology, has always been an advocate for physical activity, as she knows its benefits not only on one's physical health, but also their mental health. Growing up, whenever I was sick, sad, angry, or in a depressive state, my mom would always tell me, “Go work out, you need to get your endorphins!” Now here I am, realizing of course, mother is always right.
Here are just some of the many reasons why getting moving is a game-changer for not only your physical wellbeing but for your mental health as well:
Stress Relief: Exercising acts like a natural stress reliever. When you work out, your body releases endorphins—the "feel-good" hormones. This means fewer worries and a brighter mood!
Boosting Confidence: As you make progress in your fitness journey, your self-esteem gets a major lift! Achieving those fitness goals, no matter how small, empowers you to tackle other challenges in life. Even as simple as getting up out of bed and going on a walk, or simply getting to the gym, proves to yourself that you care about yourself enough to show up. Self love baby <3
Improved Focus: Regular physical activity increases blood flow to the brain, which can enhance concentration and focus. This is huge for all my fellow A.D.D. people! Say goodbye to that midday slump and hello to increased productivity!
Social Connection: Joining a workout class or sports team opens the door to new friendships. I know so many people who have met all their friends at the gym. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people not only boosts motivation but also provides a great baseline for a supportive community.
Mental Clarity: Working out provides a perfect opportunity to clear your mind. Whether you're out for a run or hitting that yoga mat, these moments of mindfulness can help you process thoughts and reduce anxiety. It also gives you a space to put the world aside for the duration of your workout, where all you need to focus on is yourself and the exercise you’re completing. This can be a form of meditation by being in the present moment.
Taking care of your body works hand in hand with nurturing your mind. Find a workout routine you enjoy and make it a priority. Whether it's dancing, lifting weights, or hiking, do what feels good for YOU!
So lace up those sneakers, embrace the process, and reap the mental and physical rewards. You've got the power to transform not just your body, but your whole mindset!
Stay strong, stay positive!
XOXO,
